The Willow School and Broadwaters' Children's Centre

PHSE and RSE

We want our children to become great communicators, who are confident to share their views and opinions. We ensure that PSHE is at the core of everything we do. By doing so it allows our children to blossom into confident, independent, reflective and responsible members of the ever changing society around them. We strive to ensure children are challenged intellectually, socially, spiritually and morally. We want our children to grow and develop in a safe and nurturing environment where they are able to express themselves articulately, gain a further understanding of themselves as unique people and build resilience. The Willow Primary School encourages children to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. In order to ensure that we met the expectations of the PSHE curriculum and the new RSE curriculum we use a scheme called One Decision that encompasses all of the fundamental aspects. Our approach to teaching PSHE is intended to support and encourage all learners to be the very best they can be. PSHE is taught weekly as a stand alone session and then the core values and other aspects are embedded throughout class activity in the week.

We Ensure that Children:

  • Engage in a varied, vibrant and up to date PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) curriculum that is intertwined with our school values in order to empower our children to thrive in 21st century life.
  • Learn about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health.
  • Develop life-skills in weekly PSHE lessons which are fun and relevant for their age group. We follow the 'One Decision’ PSHE scheme which is recognised by the PSHE Association to approach important topics in an engaging, age-appropriate and sensitive manner.
  • Make links across the curriculum through science as well as our PSHE and One Decision Scheme.
  • Reflect and act upon our school value in their daily lives as they are embedded in all aspects of our curriculum. We believe our values produce empathetic, resilient and compassionate individuals that are not only proud of themselves but make us proud in the wider community.
